Hi, have we met? I’m Marta, the recently hired and very excited but still disoriented and a tad nervous publicity assistant. It’s great to meet you!
Today marks the end of my very first week at Dundurn, and boy, has it been a jam-packed five days! I’ve been assigned the titles I’ll be working on, sat in on my first meetings, and was even able to set up a media interview for an author I’m working with. I’m slowly learning my way around the office and each day I get more comfortable. I can only imagine what things will be like a week or month from now.
As a public relations student I interned with a television news station, so my decision to move into publishing came a bit from left field for many of my friends and family. I’ve been fielding the same question since announcing my new job: why publishing?
To me, publishing is the perfect harmony of my personal and professional interests. I’m a self-professed book nerd (I’ve read close to 50 books in the last six months) and would gladly trade an evening out for a good book and mug of tea. Professionally, I’ve always loved writing, meeting new people, and using my skill set to help others achieve their goals. Publicity affords me all of these opportunities and more.
It seems I have started at a busy time and I have much to look forward to in the next month. We have two big tradeshows coming up and this will be my first time attending. We have a launch event next week, another event shortly after for which I will be assisting the author with media, and not to mention getting into the routine of daily responsibilities: press releases, media requests, and more.
There is still much for me to learn, but I’m delighted to be aboard the Dundurn Team. My plan is to blog again one year from now and see how things have changed since today. In the meantime, If you’re ever in the office wondering who I am, chances are I’m still trying to figure out how to use the photocopier.
Marta is the (new) Publicity Assistant at Dundurn Press and spends her days with her two greatest loves: communications and books. Aside from writing press releases, Marta likes skating, tacos and David Bowie.
You love David Bowie?
Have you visited Courtney’s office yet?
