Every year the Canadian Children’s Book Centre organizes Canadian Children’s Book Week, sponsored by TD bank. It now takes place in May to ensure better weather for travelling, and to allow teachers and librarians in the various regions of Canada more time with the books leading up to an author’s (or illustrator’s visit). This year, Mahtab Narsimhan, author of The Deadly Conch, book three in the harrowing Tara trilogy, is in Winnipeg for Book Week. She’s forwarded her first posting below and will check in throughout the week as she tours around various schools and libraries in Winnipeg and the surrounding towns. Here’s her first post:
Winterpeg lived up to its name this Sunday, May 2nd but so did the warm Winnipegers at McNally Robinson. In spite of the unexpected snowfall, there were lots of people at McNally’s which is the hub of activity on a Sunday afternoon with its wide selection of books, toys and their fabulous restaurant, Prairie Ink.
Met with Margaret Saull from the Children’s section who was super-efficient and all set up for my arrival. Chatted with many people in the store and even one of the students from Queenston School where I will be presenting later in the week.
Also met wonderful Anita Daher; writer, mom, editor at Great Plains and a great gal to be with. Spent the afternoon chatting about writing, Wager (her horse) and all things Winnipeg.
Loving it so far and looking forward to Day 2!
Karen has been active in the Canadian publishing industry for almost fourteen years. During that time, she's worked in the marketing and publicity departments of numerous publishers including Owl Books (now Maple Tree Press), Stoddart Kids, and Penguin Group Canada. She joined Dundurn Press in October, 2009 as their Publicity Manager. While she enjoys a good scary movie, she doesn't like it when people sneak up on her.
