Celebrating the arrival of a new book is always a happy affair. When you are working on a book inside a publishing house you spend a great deal of time crafting the message, getting the look right and preparing the book for the market. For a publisher, or anyone working on that book, the book already has a rich life by the time we hold it in our hands.

Former NAC chair Jean Therese Riley, Mario Bernardi first conductor and second music director of the NAC, Sarah Jennings, current President and CEO Peter Herrndorft

Last night we celebrated Art and Politics: the History of the National Arts Centre by Sarah Jennings. This book is vitally important because we have a very short history memory in Canada. The NAC celebrates it’s 40th year this Tuesday, June 2nd. Much of that early history would have been lost except for Sarah’s diligence in recording , taping and talking to the founders. Art and Politics came to life last night when many of the key supporters, the people that Sarah wrote about, came to celebrate. The very people that have devoted their lives to keeping the performing arts alive in Canada.

David Silcox, current president and CEO of Sotheby's Canada; Nona MacDonald Heaslip, Sarah Jennings, Walter Bowen

Â

Â

Â

Â

A truly distinguished gathering. However the impact on everyone associated with the book was best exemplified by Gillian Watts from Word Watch who prepared the index for the book who said it was thrilling to watch the index come alive.

We also celebrated Trails and Tribulations: Confessions of a Wilderness Pathfinder by Hap Wilson. Hap is a legendary guide in Temagami who now works out of Lake Rosseau. This was a different audience to the Art and Politics launch but similar in their passion and commitment to what they believe in. This launch was held at MEC where we were all surrounded by the trappings of Hap’s profession. Hap told us of the joys and troubles of guiding and what he as learned over the years. The book and the event included his art work and those of  his partner Ingrid who also illustrated the book. From fighting off moose, handling crazy paddlers and dealing with GPS reliant customers Hap has done it all.

Yesterday, in celebration of the launch of Art and Politics, we brought you an interview with G. Hamilton Southam.

Today we’ll continue this series with conversations with Marcel Masse, Marti Maraden, and Robert Lepage.

On political patronage – The Hon. Marcel Masse was the minister responsible for culture on the Conservative government of Brian Mulroney. The Conservatives had been out of power for a long time and the question of political patronage meant many unqualified people were appointed to positions for political reward but with no qualification for the job they received. Some appointed to the NAC board were no exception. Many years later Mr. Masse, who was extremely politically partisan himself, lamented the system

[audio:04 Track 04.mp3]

Marti Maraden – appointed Director of English Theatre at the National Arts Centre in 1998 and who served for seven years, comments on what she found as theatre people’s public perception of the NAC and what they really felt

[audio:05 Track 05.mp3]

The brilliant Quebec theatre director Robert Lepage was invited to become the Director of French Theatre at the NAC in the early nineties and came full of dreams and illusions about what he could do. Jean Gascon his predecessor as Director of Theatre had also dreamed of combining French and English theatre interests. Here’s what Lepage thought when he was appointed

[audio:06 Track 06.mp3]

A chance to try out new technology in relation to live performance was one of the attractions for Lepage. High Definition Television was high on the agenda. While the project ultimately failed, the Metropolitan Opera over twenty years later demonstrated that it is a good idea as a money-maker for the arts. Sadly it did not fly at the NAC.

We’re very excited that today is the release of a Dundurn book on the history of the National Arts Centre, Art and Politics.

The author, Sarah Jennings, is a political/cultural journalist who served for nearly a decade as the CBC’s national arts reporter from Ottawa. She’s provided us with some of the MP3’s of her interviews in preparation for her book, and for the next three days we’ll be sharing them with you.

Today, we give you Sarah’s clips from Sarah’s interview with G. Hamilton Southam, a member of the wealthy Southam publishing family and the man who took on the assignment to build the National Arts Centre, subsequently becoming its first director general. His links to power through his personal friendship with then-Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson were crucial to allowing the project to be completed in the face of runaway costs. Mr. Pearson had decided that the new NAC would be his Centenial Project for the Capitol.

Now, most government building projects would require lengthy tenders and architectural competitions. Mr. Southam was able to go directly to the P.M. and allowed to go ahead and choose his own architect. Mr. Southam was age 90 when he gave this interview. He died on July 1, 2008.

[audio:01 Track 01.mp3]

The question of rising costs for construction was a huge political problem and led to questions in the House of Commons. Southam comments on the rise in costs

[audio:02 Track 02.mp3]

On runaway costs – Southam comments on why he was able to keep going, despite the costs

[audio:03 Track 03.mp3]

Tomorrow, interviews with Marcel Masse, Marti Maraden, and Robert Lepage.

Oh what an exciting day! Not only did today see the launch of Bookarmy, but it is also Canada Book Day and Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. In light of it being Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day we here at Dundurn thought why not tweak the name a bit to Take Our Readers to Work Day, that way you, our readers, can see what goes on during a day here at Dundurn. So without further adieu here’s what the day has broughtÂ

9:00:A yummy start to my day – eating a bowl of oatmeal while checking my emails and twitter. The majority of the emails I received had to do with an upcoming launch for Susan Papp’s Outcast, which a heart warming true story about a couple that is separated during the Second World War and who are reunited years later in Canada. Update RSVP list.

9:30:Finishing up the copy for a flyer annoucing the release of Art and Politics by Sarah Jennings which the Ottawa Writer’s Festival has kindly aggreed to put on display for us. Â

10:00:Emailing copy for the flyer to my colleague Erin (yes there’s two of us!) and I’m now finalizing the titles that we will be submitting to the Quill & Quire for their Fall Preview edition.

10:35: My boss Beth (VP of Sales & Marketing) arrives back from the London Book Fair. Chatting about London and what’s going on here ensues.

10:45: Receive the Art and Politics flyer from Erin. It looks wonderful! Really eye-catching. Proofread it and send her a few changes that need to be made.

11:00: Working on one of my favourite projects – the Teachers’ Resources Guides that we are developing and have been posting online. Click here to see our webpage which is still in development. Right now I’m working on getting the tables and graphs for Speechless ready for Erin to design.

11:41: All done with the Art and Politics flyer! And I’m back to working on the Speechless guide.

12:30: Now working on an invitation list for the upcoming Toronto book launch for Art and Politics. Hmm … now that I think about it it’s been pretty much of an Art and Politics day.

13:00:Lunch time! Mmmm! Going to run some errands and enjoy the fresh air after a healthy lunch of soup.

14:00: Quick update meeting with Beth

14:05: Back to working on invitation list – trying to track down mailing addresses

15:00: Fielding queries about whether I or my colleague Ali will be doing the publicity for certain upcoming titles.

15:15: Looking into how to get 38 boxes of books that are cluttering up our front office back to our warehouse. Â

15:30: Argg!!!! Email isn’t working! Drats!!!!

15:45:Yay! Email is back up and working

15:46: Still working on that invitation list

16:30: Now blogging about my day.

17:00: And that’s a wrap!

Hope you enjoyed this brief snap shot of what a day is like for this publicist.
